Foodie Friday: Save 100+ calories at Starbucks

i don’t know about you- but I have a serious love affair with Starbucks and my favorite drink is a White Chocolate Mocha.

Even through my training this has been hard to give up but I’m down to having 3 a week AND I’ve found a way to knock 100+ calories off my favorite drink.

To start if you usually get whipped cream and 2% milk you can immediately save 100 calories in a tall, by eliminating whipped cream and getting nonfat milk. I was already doing that but now I also ask for only 1 pump of the white mocha (normally a tall has 3 pumps). This brings the drink down to a much more manageable 200 calories.

Foodie Friday: How to order at a restaurant

Let’s face it – we all are in situatoins where it’s just easier to go out to eat. Sometimes it’s because of work, sometimes it’s to spend time with friend, or the best is free food on a date.

But ordering at a restaurat can be a minefield. Between dodging the so-called “light” options and trying not to look too picky – it can be difficult to stick to a meal plan or calorie count.

There are a few tricks that I use when I eat out. First, I stay away from the appetizers and alcohol. Alcohol is empty calories so I order a club soda that gives me the same satisfaction as a vodka soda used to; ¬†and appetizers are usually large portions of food that is quick to prepare and fried or saucy (tartare is the exception and I’ll order that without the chips).

Then I never feel bad for customizing my food selection. Y0u’d be surprised to know that many “healthy” salads have more calories then other entrees on the menu so if I do go with a salad I have them hold any cheese, meats, breads and add a grilled/steamed fish. If I want an entree I’ll usually go for a steak (no butter no salt), a steamed fish (no butter, no salt, any herbs) or a chicken breast (light to no oil, no butter, no salt, extra herbs). Then I have them steam any vegetable that comes on the side, again specifying no salt and no butter – don’t automatically assume they will do this.

Overall, ordering this way will make most things on the menu fit into whatever meal plan you are on.

Happy Ordering!

Post-workout Skincare

You’ve taken the time to make sure your body is happy and healthy but what about your face? Let’s face it, you can’t just sweat it out for hours at the gym and let that sweat and bacteria sit on your face until your evening skincare routine. Your asking for trouble! Especially if you have problematic skin like me. Here are a few tips to keep your skin glowing and clear of breakouts.

For morning workouts:

If you’re working out in the morning there is no need to wash your face before your workout and again after. Stripping the skin before your workout is a waste of product seen as you’re just going to be sweating it off.  After your workout is the most important time to cleanse. Post workout is not the time to use exfoliating scrubs or masks either. Your skin has been sweating and chances are you’ve already been wiping it several times with a towel so be carful not to irritate it by being to rough. Keep it simple. Face wash, toner, moisturizer, sunscreen.

Workout without makeup:

Whether you’re hitting the gym after work or dont like being seen without makeup, working out with a full face of makeup on is just a no no in so many ways. First off if your sweating a lot, a least you should be, so runny foundation and raccoon eyes dripping all over the mat or machine will look ridiculous. Secondly, it’s so unhealthy for your skin and just asking for clogged pores. In this case, it a good idea to wash your face or use some makeup remover towelettes before your workout. You’re beautiful without makeup. Let that healthy glow from the workout shine through!

I beg all of you to wear sunscreen everyday and to reapply every couple hours. Even if you’re a teenager who loves that deep summer tan and aren’t worried about sun damage remember, the damage you do now will show up in 10 years and reversing that damage can cost thousands. Even on overcast days UVA rays can damage the skin. Think of UVA as “aging” and UVB as “burning”. UVB is strongest during the day when the sun is high in the sky but UVA can come through the clouds, window of your car, and even get you when you’re in the shade. Use a broad spectrum sunscreen to keep your skin protected from UVA and UVB.

Hydrated skin is happy skin. Drink as much water as you can especially after long sweaty workouts. Dehydrated skin will look dull, dry, and even wrinkly. However, drinking a ton of water won’t make wrinkles vanish. Water also keeps muscles hydrated, energized, and also carries toxins out of the body. When muscles don’t have enough water they become more easily fatigued.

Drinking enough fluids is important when exercising. Follow the American College of Sports Medicine guidelines for fluid intake before and during physical activity. These guidelines recommend that people drink about 17 ounces of fluid about two hours before exercise. During exercise, they recommend that people start drinking fluids early, and drink them at regular intervals to replace fluids lost by sweating.

Useful tip:

Keeping a separate toiletry bag for just pre/post workout skincare in you car or gym bag will ensure you are always prepared. Your skin will thank you later!

Fashionably Fit Feature: Amazon Secrets

Hello my Fashionably Fit friends! Today I’m going to share my favorite way to store my photos. When the iphone 5s came out I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the upgraded camera but I did not take into consideration the extra memory all of my memories would take up, so I got the 16G (doesn’t that sound like a lot of memory?) Well it’s not, and since then I’ve constantly found myself deleting my photos. Then I learned that my Amazon Prime had a secret benefit – it comes with an unlimited Amazon Photo Cloud (very similar to the icloud that you have to pay extra for). Amazon Prime has a ton of benefits that I already paid for (streaming tv and 2 day shipping) but with this thrown in – I think Amazon Prime is a great use of $79 per year(I’m a graduate student so grad students – make sure to get your discount). xoxo

Foodie Friday: Why you should eat your prunes

So the word prune used to make me scrunch up my nose (apparently I wasn’t the only one because the prune board – yes there is one – actually requested a name change to dried plums). But let’s call them what they are ladies. ¬†Healthy. Diuretic.Delicious.

I made up this little poem “Prunes prunes dried by the sun, the more you eat the better your body will run”. haha

So ladies, why should you eat your prunes?

  1. It will keep you regular (you know what I mean)
  2. They have high levels of Phytonutrients which means they protect against chornic diseases
  3. Good source of Vitamin K which improves circulation helping us all stay looking young
  4. Also a good source of beta carotene which reverses the signs of again
  5. They actually taste good, go ahead, try one and let me know what you think. For a serving I usually have 3 in the morning and 3 before bed.
